Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of X (formerly Twitter), recently hinted that it plans to launch its new email service, XMail.
Elon Musk To Launch Gmail’s Alternative, XMail
With XMail, Musk is looking to release an alternative and direct competitor to Google’s most popular email service, Gmail, which boasts over 1.8 billion active users worldwide and challenges Google’s dominance in the email market.
The announcement about the XMail email service came when Nate McGrady, a top member of X’s Engineering and Security team, asked Musk, “When are we making XMail?” to which he replied, “It’s coming.”

Many users reacted to the news of XMail and expressed their opinions on the upcoming product. One user said, “Lost trust in Gmail. Time to make the switch to Xmail asap!”, while the other one stated, “I will use my Gmail as how I use my Hotmail now, for junks.”
XMail’s news comes immediately after rumors of Google discontinuing its Gmail service started sparking widespread concern in the tech community. This was apparently due to a viral post featuring a screenshot of a Google email with the subject line, “Google is sunsetting Gmail,” by August 1, 2024, which began circulating on social media platforms, including X.
“After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close. As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service,” the message reads.
“This means that as of this date, Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails. The decision to sunset Gmail has been made with careful consideration of the evolving digital landscape and our commitment to providing high-quality, innovative solutions that meet the needs of our users,” it added.
However, Google Gmail quickly debunked the claim and responded with a post on X by saying: “Gmail is here to stay,” confirming that it isn’t going anywhere.

The company explained that it has only changed the default Gmail interface from basic HTML to a more modern aesthetic one in January 2024 in line with its Material Design theme.
Unfortunately, not many details about the XMail email service are available yet. Also, the release date is uncertain. However, there is a chance that XMail may be a part of the X app.
