WhatsApp Is Testing New AI Stickers In Beta

WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform, is reportedly working on a new feature that would allow users to create AI-generated stickers from simple text prompts.

WhatsApp Is Testing New AI Stickers In Beta

According to a new report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently rolling out the new AI feature on WhatsApp Beta for Android v2.23.17.14. This feature empowers users to create any custom sticker using text-based commands.

In other words, the AI would generate a sticker based on the description that the user enters via a text prompt, similar to the current generative AI models like OpenAI’s DALL-E or Midjourney.

After installing WhatsApp Beta v2.23.17.14, a new “Create” button will be visible within the Stickers tab on opening the keyboard. On selecting this option, it will open the AI stickers window.

Here, the user will be prompted to type a creative text for WhatsApp’s AI model, which would then generate custom stickers based on the description previously entered. Users can select from the generated AI stickers and share them within individual or group chats.

To show an example of how the new feature works, WABetaInfo created a sticker featuring a laughing cat sitting on top of a skateboard, generated based on the description provided, “Cat laughing on a skateboard.”

Those who receive AI-generated stickers can easily recognize them, as they will have a signature look or watermark indicating the sticker has been generated by the AI technology from Meta.

The WABetaInfo report states, “Al stickers are generated using a secure technology offered by Meta. You’re always in control over stickers generated by AI: in case you think a sticker is inappropriate or harmful, you can report it to Meta.” However, which generative AI model WhatsApp selected for the new AI feature remains to be seen.

Currently, the new feature is available to a very limited group of beta testers who have installed the latest update of WhatsApp beta for Android. It is expected to roll out to even more users over the coming weeks.

The AI stickers feature on WhatsApp, which merges technology and creativity, has the potential to transform the way people communicate on the instant messaging app by making conversations more unique, personal, and inclusive.
