WhatsApp, the popular Meta-owned instant messaging platform, is reportedly developing a new feature that will allow Android users to transfer chat history from their old phones using a QR code.

WhatsApp May Allow Chat Transfer Using A QR Code

WABetaInfo, a known WhatsApp tipster publication, discovered the new feature in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.13.6 update, which is available on the Google Play Store.

For those unaware, the above feature was first reportedly being tested in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.9.19 update in April 2023. Although this feature is still under development on WhatsApp beta for Android, it appears that WhatsApp is currently experimenting with another section to let users quickly transfer their chat history from an old phone using a QR code.

This alternative feature appears to be universal, designed to transfer chat history across different platforms without depending on specific sections or methods.

“Although this is purely speculative, this new section suggests WhatsApp may be aiming to enhance the migration process universally across devices, as it doesn’t mention that the old phone needs to be an Android device,” the WABetaInfo report said.

Currently, WhatsApp allows chat history migration between iOS and Android devices. However, this requires users to navigate a specific section and use a physical cable to complete the process. In addition, older Android versions do not support this migration feature, limiting this feature to users with newer Android operating systems.

“The upcoming feature might aim to potentially enhance this capability by making the migration process universal across different platforms. However, further details about how this universal feature operates are still awaited, and additional information will likely be revealed as the development progresses in the future,” the report added.

Specific details regarding implementing this alternative feature are currently unavailable as it is still in development.
